Even though not licensed until late 1986, I would visit my local Nissan dealer and sit in the showroom mode for hours on end, dreaming I was the owner……..driving the Autobahn of course “

I personally like the boxy styling.

State of the art back then. The original “Bitching Betty”….. before Airbags, TPMS, hUD, keyless remote and start. Even 15-16” wheels, and fancy velour was high tech. Simple styling and not trying to make four hundred changes to squeak a .1 MPG fuel economy for each year.

My co-worker had one same color. It would randomly die, he'd tow it to the shop, then it would run fine. His mechanic drove it for a week and it ran fine. He got it back and it stranded him again. He lived with it like that for 4 years, no one could figure it out, he eventually traded it in

LOUD was a common stereo option, increased the bass & trebble frequency range without modifying mid frequencies. Some have a dial instead of a button.

We had a few in our HS parking lot in the early 90's. I also took my behind the wheel drivers test in a maroon one in 1994. My instructor was 85 on a good day with two hearing aides and chain smoking. Needless to say I passed.

I know the 80s and 90s were not the best for performance...but thats when automotive quality and reliability was at its peak...especially for the Japanese. Simple was beautiful back then, today simple is cheap and ugly.

Does the door keypad really have two numbers per button (1|2, 3|4, 5|6, 7|8, 9|0)? How would you choose which number is entered? Do you nudge the button left/right as you press it?

It has about the same horsepower and weight... as my super-cheap, completely-base-model, "compact car" 2017 Jetta, whose engine has 2 fewer cylinders and half the engine displacement (although admittedly adds a turbo). *And* it has less torque to boot (and probably a steeper/narrower power band, the Jetta's is surprisingly wide and flat) It has about the same dimensions, too, and the Jetta is a "compact" these days!

The loud button on the radio worked for all cassette tapes. But they had loud chrome cassettes that were designed and sold for this feature. The radio feature lasted longer in cars than the upgraded cassettes..

16:06 Well the Maxima, while being the flagship, wasn’t goal oriented around back seat practicality/space. Although if you ask me, pretty much all of the Nissan sedans aren’t known for having bigger second rows when compared to the competition. But the Altima is more so their practical family sedan. In fact, bearing in mind that the measuring standards might have been different back then - even when the Altima came out in the early 90’s, the second row leg room was still more than the current Maxima. ‘86 Maxima - 33” ‘93 Altima - 34.7” ‘21 Maxima - 34.2” ‘21 Altima - 35.2” All of which are a true far cry from the larger mid-sizers of today like the Camry (38”) and the cavernous Accord (40.4). So the Maxima really hasn’t grown all that much as far as backseat legroom is concerned - only 1.2”. Now the body has grown a little over 11 inches and I’m sure other aspects of the body have increased over the years.

When you watch these videos, it's amazing how much he really doesn't know about cars especially cars that are older. For an example he is mentioning the Altima the Altima did not come around until later pretty much it was a Stanza and then the Sentra as a small car before it.

Loud button increased bass also called loudness button. My father had a secondhand Japanese imported 1985 Nissan U11 Bluebird which from the A posts to the rear was exactly the same as this car. A twin spark 1.6 litre engine no power steering it was dreadful ! I would say a 1986 E24 520i with the 2 litre BMW engine would have been faster than the Maxima never mind the 528i which would have obliterated it ! So that Maxima is in fact based on the first front wheel drive Bluebird !

HI Doug! I still have my 1988 Nissan Maxima GXE fully loaded vehicle. I brought my 1988 Nissan brand new in November of 1988. This Maxima has the digital speedometer and everything still works. I did had to replace the digital speedometer recently. In 1988, Nissan took away the voice control which was the reason I wanted the Nissan. According to the sales person, he told me that there was a lot of customer complaints about the voice control and that was disappointing. I have way more mileage and it still runs very good. Silver Frost is the color which is the same color you are sharing with us.

Mom and dad had an 88 5spd. This was a really nice car for the time. Ours had the cursed adjustable suspension that was cool when it worked (soft-medium-firm). It was cursed because it wore out prematurely and was only soft at that point. I loved driving it but, I wrecked it in 1992. I blame the suspension.

The “Loud” button isn’t funny. It’s called “Loudness” button and it enhances the bass (only) to compensate for human ear’s insensitivity in detecting bass at lower volumes. It’s a feature that still exists today in many audio equipment.

I’ve seen you marvel at the “loud” button before and it seems you have no idea what it was for. Basically it was just a preset that enhanced the sound of cassettes. Loudness buttons were on practically every tape deck back then. It didn’t just make the music louder.

Doug I don't know if Ford/Lincoln was the first to have an keyless entry pad but they did it back in 1980. The 1980 Ford Thunderbird and Lincoln Mark V both had these keyless entry pad. Fords and Lincolns still have these keyless keypad on most of their mid and high level trim vehicle to this day. It's integrated into the B-pillars on the drivers side, it won't show the numbers until you touch the B-pillar.
